how to make your vagina smell good?
Are you stressed about an unpleasant aroma emanating from your lady parts? Well, I’m about to drop a truth bomb that will make you think twice about your feminine fragrance. All vaginas smell. There, I said it. So now, how to make your vagina smell good?
Your vagina smells? You're not alone!
Despite what leading body wash commercials would like you to believe, it’s completely normal to have some kind of smell down there (and no, I’m not talking about a dainty floral one). Different women carry different scents and body odor (along with unpleasant odors), and in most cases, there’s nothing to worry about.
If you’re one of the many women struggling with this concern, please know that you’re not alone. Seriously – Every single person I know with a vagina questions their feminine hygiene from time to time. It’s not only normal but also very healthy to stay in tune with our bodies.
Different odors can let us know what’s up down there and alert us when something is awry. It’s like a secret signal from our body that only we can decipher. The first step to unraveling this intelligence being sent by your vagina is to establish your baseline scent. Once you know what your ‘normal’ is, you’ll be able to recognize when something isn’t right.
I bet you didn’t realize how smart your vagina was, did you?
What makes your vagina smell bad?
There are a few different reasons for changes in vaginal odor: Menstruation, infections, sweat, certain foods, and sex are among the most common.
Some would think that is your vagina discharges or secretions fault if your vagina smells somewhat fishy. But, you could be dealing with bacterial vaginosis, which is essentially an imbalance of bacteria. Now before you go scrubbing your undercarriage like a madwoman, there are many different types of bacteria living peacefully in your vagina at all times. We actually need a happy balance of bacteria to thrive and stay healthy, but if this symmetry gets rocked, you may just need an antibiotic.
Ok, so maybe your vagina smells like beer or bread – This is absolutely no reason to freak out. It sounds like a simple yeast infection to me. Many people carry healthy amounts of yeast in their intestines and mouth, and women have it in their vaginas. It only becomes an issue when our body creates an overabundance of candida (a specific type of yeast). If you find yourself in a, well, yeasty situation – Grab an antifungal medication, and carry on with your bad self.
One last common complaint I hear from women is that their vagina has a sour or stale smell. The answer to this lies in a tricky little protozoan called a trichomona. These microscopic organisms are transmitted sexually (even during oral sex) and cause Trichomoniasis, one of the most common causes of vaginitis. In fact, millions of Americans are infected with this STI every year! It causes embarrassing odors and discharge, but fortunately, can be easily treatable with the right antibiotics.
Ok, so now that we know why our vagina smells and what those various scents mean, it’s time to dive headfirst into how we can maintain a positive baseline odor.
How to make your vagina healthy and hygienic?
Most people (men and women) care a lot about how their body smells, and the vagina is no exception. Luckily, there are many ways to make sure your lady parts stay fresh so you can stop worrying and get on with your life.
The first, and hopefully, the most obvious solution is to keep up with your body’s basic hygiene needs (i.e., shower and change your panties on the reg). Be careful not to disturb the delicate pH balance in your vagina with aggressively fragrant washes or scrubs! Instead, explore some natural, vagina-friendly options that will make sure you’re both happy.
You may have noticed that your vagina has a unique aroma during menstruation, and that’s 100% to be expected. Don’t try to mask the smell with floral tampons, instead seek products that can safely support you through each cycle.
Speaking of natural products that cater to your basic cleanliness needs, I can’t talk highly enough about feminine wipes. As many of you know, I’m a massive fan of body wipes for those days when showering seems darn-near impossible. They’re perfect for on-the-go moments when you need to freshen up, without the whole world knowing about it.
Keep a pack of feminine wipes in your purse, glove box, or gym bag, so you can stop talking smack about your lady parts and start embracing your feminine energy (and smell)!
